VOTE AGAINST A POLITICIAN WHO WON'T KEEP
US SAFE

rachel mitchell is a danger to public safety

Under the last decade of Rachel Mitchell’s oversight and Republican leadership, "crime" has risen in Arizona. That’s because mass incarceration doesn’t reduce "crime". Rachel Mitchell's extreme and punitive policies won't protect our communities.

What actually keeps us safe is addressing the root causes of violence and harm. The next Maricopa County Attorney has to invest in our communities, rather than pouring more money into mass incarceration. Investments in supportive services for mental health, substance abuse, employment, housing, Medicaid, and public benefits will make communities safer and stronger. Rachel Mitchell has refused to acknowledge this path to public safety.

Arizona’s mass incarceration crisis is particularly bad and expensive

Over the last 40 years, while the national prison population has quadrupled, Arizona's prison population has multiplied by twelveNot only is incarceration ineffective, but it’s also expensive. Arizona taxpayers currently shell out over $1.2 billion per year on mass incarceration.

Under Rachel Mitchell’s leadership, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office has been particularly punitive on simple drug possession and drug paraphernalia possession cases instead of investing in effective, community-based solutions to substance use. Mitchell has insisted on treating those cases as felonies rather than misdemeanors, which has only worsened Arizona’s mass incarceration crisis.

alternatives to incarceration

rachel mitchell believes murder is justice

Rachel Mitchell, self-proclaimed as "pro-life", actively supports the death penalty. Maricopa County has the second highest number of executions in Arizona and accounts for 73% of all capital sentences. The death penalty is disproportionately applied to Black people. Almost one month into her appointment as County Attorney, we saw Rachel Mitchell seek the death penalty in a case where a police officer was killed.
